Assalam and hello! I wrote this at first for my own planning, getting information about these areas (especially Tiger Leaping Gorge) DIY-style is kinda hard, without Google Maps to plan around with. So, here's my DIY itinerary for your reference, for Malaysians, by Malaysians.

Notes

*IMPORTANT NOTE: Wanderlog here uses Google Maps, which if used for China, very inaccurate and outdated. Please use Amap instead. For reference purposes, I'll try to mark locations here to be as accurate as possible in relation to Amap locations.
**Safety Note: Kunming - Lijiang are high altitude places, that is why I stopped by Kunming for some time first (spend a night here is recommended) just so you can acclimate to the high altitude.
Go get Acetazolamide pills (which helps with high altitude) from pharmacy (go to oh idk, Caring Pharmacy or something, and ask prescriptions for meds for high altitude places).
For reference:
  • Cameron Highlands: 1,500 to 1,800 meters (as reference point)
  • Kunming: ~1,890 meters
  • Lijiang: ~2,400 meters
  • Tiger Leaping Gorge (River level/Escalator): ~1,800 meters
  • Tiger Leaping Gorge (High Trail hiking): ~2,000 to 2,600 meters
Apps used:
  1. Alipay: Your main method of payment, which you can link your bank cards (Wise card also can). Get it set up before arriving here. Btw, TnG app also have Alipay built in too, so you can use TnG as backup.
  2. Didi: Equivalent of Grab. I hope you're ready to receive calls in Mandarin whenever your driver arrives, because if you're not there at the pickup point, well... Ever experience Chinese uncles shouting at you? Be sure to survey the pickup location first. And yes, it can use Alipay as payment.
  3. Amap: Equivalent to Google Maps/Waze. It's accurate enough that you can use it for public transports too!
  4. Trip.com: While there's Klook and the rest, most people on internet said that for China, Trip.com (or CTrip) is the most reliable. I booked train HSR (High Speed Rail) tickets and accommodations here.
  5. Google Translate: Unless you know Chinese, be prepared to use these. I suppose it helps if you at least learn a bit of basic Chinese words before the trip (especially for situations like shopping or ordering food). Be sure to download the language pack so you can use it offline too.
